He was locked in the past and fighting to find his way back again, Alexander realised, standing rooted to the spot. He literally couldn’t stop himself. Seeing Ellie so radically changed in this new and very glamorous outfit had completely thrown him. She had reminded him of his wife; his ex-wife, the bolting bride.

‘You’re trying too hard,’ he called after her, swiping a tense hand across his brow. ‘Don’t you know how ridiculous you look?’

She stopped and turned. He could see now that he might as well have slapped her in the face. She was stunned, and as she looked at him he knew that he was wrong, but even so he couldn’t help himself; the past had too firm a hold on him.

‘You let your hair fly loose, and you pin it up with passion flowers. Did you think I wouldn’t notice? Do you take me for a fool?’

‘No, Alexander, anything but that. I think you know exactly what you’re saying and exactly how much you’re hurting me. Congratulations. It must please you to think you can upset me like this.’

He caught up with her and pinned her against the wall. She didn’t flinch this time, which made him madder than ever. She was following in his wife’s footsteps. First she played the virgin, the fresh, unaffected girl; next the vamp with her pout and her eyes on his money. Did she really believe that was all it took to reel him in?

For one terrible moment Ellie thought Alexander might rip the flowers from her hair, but then she told herself he would never do that, and she just had to wait for him to come back from wherever it was he had journeyed to. She’d seen him mad before, but nothing like this.

‘Are you wearing your hair like that just to show off your scar?’ he demanded. ‘That’s what they’re saying in there…’ He glanced past her towards the dining room.

Not just in there, Ellie was sure, as the silence continued behind the door of the ladies’ room. Surely everyone on Alexander’s yacht had to be aware of this exchange. Nothing travelled faster than gossip, and reports of this confrontation between them would be all over the island by morning.

‘If I reject you, do you think you’re going to catch the sympathy vote of one of the other men?’

The other men? The thought had never occurred to her. Ellie touched her cheek, horrified that Alexander could even think that way. ‘Are you finished? Can you think of anything nastier to say to me? Or is that it?’

‘You look like a tart!’ Alexander said, provoked. ‘You look like a cheap, stupid tart—’

‘And you look like a—’ She only broke off because the group of scientists had caught up with them.

‘Ah, there she is,’ one of them said, smiling as she caught sight of Ellie.

The academics were unaware of what was taking place, Ellie realised. They had to be the only innocents left on board.
